What probationary employment means
A probationary period works as a trial that lets both employer and employee assess whether the arrangement works in practice. The employer evaluates competence and work ethic while the employee decides whether the job suits them.
Under Swedish employment law, a probationary period may not exceed six months before it converts into permanent employment.
The rules during the probationary period
The employment contract must be in writing and state clearly that this is a probationary period, how long it lasts, the duties, the working hours and the terms.
During the probationary period, largely the same employment rules apply as for permanent employment, including working hours, pay and holiday. The rules on termination, however, differ markedly.
Ending a probationary period
Either party may end it without giving a reason, although written notice within reasonable time limits is required.
Security during the trial period
Despite the uncertainty, employees are entitled to guidance, support and a proper introduction. They have the right to the agreed pay, sick pay, working environment standards and working hours – the same as permanent staff.
